Effects of sheep grazing on abundance and predators of field vole (Microtus agrestis) in upland Britain

چکیده

A technique using fresh feeding signs as an index of density was validated and used to survey the effects of sheep grazing on vole population densities in four upland habitats in the northern Peak District National Park, UK. In grazed areas Molinia caerulea grasslands supported most voles, Nardus stricta grasslands supported fewer and Eriophorum vaginatum and Calluna vulgaris-dominated areas supported least. There were highly significant negative relationships between vole sign density and sheep numbers in these habitats. Where sheep were excluded, these same habitats had between three and nine times higher sign densities, corresponding to between 1.5 and

Population cycles of small rodents are caused by specialist predators: or are they?

Predation by specialist mammalian predators has been hypothesized to be the primary cause of multi-annual density fluctuations (‘population cycles’) in voles. Using a series of replicated field experiments, Isla Graham and Xavier Lambin have now shown that specialist mammalian predators are neither necessary nor sufficient to drive field vole Microtus agrestis population cycles. These findings ...

Species-specific limitation of vole population growth by least weasel predation: facilitation of coexistence?

Interspecific competition is usually understood as different species competing directly with each other for limited resources. However, predators can alter such competitive interactions substantially. Predation can promote the coexistence of species in a situation where it would otherwise be impossible, for example if a tradeoff between the competitive abilities and predation resistance of the ...

Hypothalamo-hypophysial control of ovulation in the vole (Microtus agrestis).

Electrical stimulation of the anterior hypothalamus of the vole, Microtus agrestis, usually results in ovulation, whereas stimulation of areas in the posterior hypothalamus do not. Ovulation can also be elicited by injections of sheep median-eminence extracts, and by preparations ofsheep luteinizing hormone. Observations on the number of corpora lutea formed, and ripe Graafian follicles remaini...

Population dynamics of microtine rodents: an experimental test of the predation hypothesis

One of the most popular hypotheses to explain the 3–5 year vole cycle in Fennoscandia is the predation hypothesis, which emphasises the role of specialist predators, especially small mustelids, in driving the microtine rodent cycle. I have tested this hypothesis in a field experiment with a focus on the interaction between the least weasel (Mustela ni alis ni alis L.) and the field vole (Microt...

How Predation and Landscape Fragmentation Affect Vole Population Dynamics

BACKGROUND Microtine species in Fennoscandia display a distinct north-south gradient from regular cycles to stable populations. The gradient has often been attributed to changes in the interactions between microtines and their predators. Although the spatial structure of the environment is known to influence predator-prey dynamics of a wide range of species, it has scarcely been considered in r...
